Darin Chavez has 20 years of
experience as a business attorney and advisor, specializing in representing
individuals, entrepreneurs and companies in corporate, media, entertainment,
sports, technology and licensing transactions and is currently a named partner at Tricarico Chavez, LLP, a boutique
entertainment and business law firm. A core aspect of Darin’s practice involves serving as general counsel and
business advisor for many of his clients, including various start-up companies,
wherein he oversees all major business initiatives and transactions, including
joint ventures and strategic partnerships, financings, entertainment,
technology and on-line undertakings, intellectual property creation,
registration, protection and licensing, executive compensation matters and
board and investor relations.An
accomplished attorney in international name, image and likeness brand licensing,
Mr. Chavez has closed a multitude of deals for clients with companies such as
WalMart, Coke, Planet Fitness, Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group, BestBuy, Target,
Mattel, Hasbro, Franco, Cherokee, EA, NBA2K, Konami, Allergan, Novartis,
Panini, Nike, Adidas, NBA, NFL, MLB, UFC, Authentic Brands Group, The Bruce Lee
Estate, Tetris Gaming and various other publishing, media, consumer goods,
manufacturing and distribution companies and retailers.
In his capacity as a sports
lawyer, Darin spent many years representing basketball players overseas, and is
credited for closing naming rights deals, commercial endorsement and sponsorship
arrangements with teams and players, and assisting in the formation of
Argentina’s first basketball school, which has produced Olympic, National Team
and professional basketball players. Darin
has represented various NBA players, coaches and management, as well as current and retired professional
athletes in a variety of sports, including his current representation of the
NBA’s all time leading scorer, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
From 2005 to 2013, Darin
served as outside general counsel for Anastasia Beverly Hills, an international
cosmetics company. During his tenure at
Anastasia Beverly Hills, Darin was responsible for implementing a wide-range of
new business initiatives and consummating deals involving the manufacturing,
marketing and distribution of the Anastasia-branded products and services. Among others, Darin oversaw and closed US
transactions with Nordstrom, Sephora, and Dillards, as well as, oversees
transactions with numerous retailers, agencies and distributors spanning the
globe. Darin was also responsible for engaging numerous celebrities to promote
the brand and the coordination of supporting programs and events, including
some of the industry’s first social media influencer activations.
Prior
to Tricarico Chavez LLP, Darin practiced in the entertainment department of the
Los Angeles office of Katten Muchin Rosenman, LLP (KMR), a national law firm
based in Chicago, and as an associate at the boutique talent
entertainment firm Pierce Gorman LLP, where he represented athletes, actors,
writers and musicians, and split his time between Los Angeles and Italy.
An
author of several articles on entertainment law, intellectual property law and
sports law, Darin was a major contributor and researcher on UCLA’s Network
Television Violence Monitoring Project, and in 1995, 1996 and 1997, was
responsible for issuing annual reports to the television networks and Congress.
His contribution to this project was recognized by President Clinton and
resulted in a rating system for television programming and video games.
Additionally, Darin is
credited as an executive producer for packaging or creating such television
series as "Being Bobby Brown", "HomeTeam", “American
Revolutionaries” and “Street Art Throwdown,” as well as associate producer and
